Digipak Update
There have been some changes made with the digipak. Instead of having a burst of coloured powder, there will be the band's logo painted. This panel will now be behind the cd and the photo of the pigs head will move to the free panel.
This is just something I have made, splattered some paint on a paper and with my fingers, I have drawn the bands logo.

Digipak developments
On Friday afternoon, I went outdoors to take images of the trees. All images were taken from a low angle and captured some images to use for the front cover of the album. As it was already decided to take images of trees, that is what I had done.
Contact Sheet:
After finishing the shoot, I had picked one image from the contact sheet and made some adjustments on Photoshop to make it more appropriate for Alternative genre album cover, such as making it in black and white and making the clouds more grey.

Video Questionnaire
To understand why people favourites their bands and how they spend money on music, Ben and I have decided to ask students in our school with questions we have came up with.
Randomly, aged from 1618, we have asked questions from below:
Have you ever heard of the band ‘Woodkid’?
If yes… continue In no... goodbye.
1. Do you enjoy their music?
2. What about their music that appeals to you most?
3. Where/when/how did you hear about the band/music?
How do you listen to the music? Via…
How many concerts have you attended in the past 6 months?
What venues have you been to?
How much money do you spend on music? (Spotify premium, apple music, CD, vinyl?)
Do you buy merchandise? (posters, digipaks, clothing?)
Do you buy magazines? Which? One?
Do you listen to any radio stations? Which?
Do you visit a band's website?
How do you watch music videos?
What do you enjoy in music video’s?
Do you prefer narrative or performance videos?
1 out of 4 people we have interviewed knew who Woodkid were. This shows that our audience are not teenagers,

Shooting for the digipak
Yesterday afternoon, Ben I have arranged to do a shoot for the digipak. We did a studio shoot to capture images of the band front and back. They all wore a white shirt to contrast the black background. Also we didn't want much colour as the front is meant to be very dark and dull and more colour on the inside.
We had used 2 box lights, a D3200 Nikon camera with a tripod. We used a tripod to reduce shake.
These images are test shots to see which camera settings and lighting goes well together.
From this image, as the lighting is too harsh and creates shadow, so we needed to turn up the aperture and increase the lightings' brightness.
From the image below, the lighting is too bright and as the lighting is lit from above, it still created shadow.
The image below is too dark.
The image below I thought was perfect lighting, so we continued to use the same setting and lighting.
I took all the images below for website purposes, but forgot to take an image of Ibz, so later we discovered that these images are pointless to use.
Contact Sheet:
From the contact sheet, I had chosen 2 best images to edit.
The two below are the best images I've chosen.
Filming the burning pigs head
On Sunday (yesterday) Ben and Lewis went to burn the pigs head supplied by Ben at their friends house. They have reported back that in total it took 30 minutes for the pigs head to burn completely and also used accelerant to spread the fire to make it more dramatic.
The pigs head was supplied by Ben's uncle who works in the butchers. They carried the pigs head in a plastic bag, frozen and placed on a fire pit where they began to set up to burn the head.
They used a SLR camera and a tripod to reduce shake.
The footage which they have filmed will be used in the music video to apply Goodwins' theory in lyrics where he believes the lyrics and visual should match, and also it is a spare footage for any scenes which doesn't go well or match, we can include the pigs head footage to balance it out.
They've also used a "smoke stick" which you burn to create fake smoke to see if that is better than the fire but then decided to stick to the fire because it is more dramatic and realistic.

Digipak update
For todays lesson, I have continued making the digipak. Although I am in charge to edit the images and place them , there are still group discussions going on. For example, today I have noticed that our plan for this digipak was to have the outside in black and white and then have the inside in colour, however we have made the mistake of when we were doing the shoot, we have used the same background colour which is black so we have noticed that it would look awaked if we use two white background for where the CD will be placed and where the coloured powder will be.
I immediately spoke to the group and see what we can do, whether to stick with the plan or change it to black and white. However this meant hat we had to come up with a new plan asap. Although we did stick to using coloured powder just with black background, we thought about what will be included as the background of where the CD will be placed. But fortunately, when the boys went to film their pigs head burning, they had taken some shots also, which I was able to use, and I have edited it in black and white, however this may change if we think it kooks better in colour.
Also when making the digipak and I got up to where I included the title and song titles, I had to use the same font as the website, this was to avoid continuity error. We have decided to use Perpetual Titling MT which is quite a formal font and suitable for the band and their genre. You will not see this font being used for a 'Little Mix' album.

Album and Song Titles
It is very important to plan out the album and the song titles. This will be useful for the digipak and the website.
As a group, we have decided to have 11 songs. This is after researching how many songs an album with alternative genre usually includes. We have researched Woodkid - The Golden Age included 14 songs, Dead Man's Bones - Dead Man's Bones included 12 songs and Arcade Fire - Reflektor included 13 songs.
Album Title:
Sons of Progression
Song Titles:
- Iron
- Asterix Dogpark
- Ógeðslega flottür (Really Cool)
- The Blue Light
- Fathers
- BrennivÃn
- Under The Allotment
- Svið ft. Georgia Borek
- The Fog
- Cardigan Dreamland
- Endirinn

Shooting for the Digipak 2
Shoot 1 - Of the band / Indoors (Studio)
Shoot 2 - Trees / Outdoors (Parks)
Shoot 3 - Coloured powders / Indoors (Studio)
Equipments needed for Shoot 1:
- SLR Camera
- Box lighting
- White background
- Cult costume used for Music Video
Equipments needed for Shoot 2:
- SLR Camera
- Natural Lighting - Preferable Camera Setting -
- Maybe a tripod
Equipments needed for Shoot 3:
- SLR Camera
- Coloured powders
- Light Set up object
- Tripod
Shoot 1:
For shoot 1, I am aiming to achieve professional images by the use of different lightings and camera setting. In our school studio, we have access to box lighting, skybox and spot lightings. Lighting will affect on how the images will turn out like. Some may have a soft effect, warm effect and bright effect.
To balance the lighting with the camera setting, I have searched different white balance settings. There are 7 settings. Auto, Tungsten, Fluorescent, Daylight and Flash. Tungsten adds warmth and Fluorescent and daylight adds a bright white lighting.
With this shoot, it will be best to shoot in Fluorescent or Daylight setting because we don't really want any filter and even if we decide later, we can add it in on Photoshop.
The camera setting will probably be ISO 200, F2.8 and 1/200. This will give a clear image and work well with whatever lighting we use.
Shoot 2:
For shoot 2, I am aiming to achieve some great silhouette outdoors photography by working with natural lighting. If its sunny I have to make sure that the sun isn't shining through the lens and if its cloudy, I must make sure the images are coming out brighter. I am thinking to be at the location around 5pm just before it gets dark so the backgorund will be dark but still some colour.
This website as helped me to understand further: Silhouette Photography Tips
Shoot 3:
For shoot 3, I am aiming achieve some still life images of the powder being "thrown". As I have decided to shoot this in the school studio, I wouldn't be able to throw coloured powder around, however I can use a light set up object which lets you use lighting form behind the equipments and place the powder on a board so it looks like its 'floating'. I would prefer the white board to show but it wouldn't matter as much. I will have to use a tripod and from right above I will capture some images. If the coloured powder isn't pigmented enough, I will edit the images on Photoshop. It is important that the coloured powder is pigmented as we have planned as a group to have colour inside the digipak as the outside is in black and white so its a shock. The camera setting will probably be the same as Shoot 1 as we don't need dramatic effect.
Shooting for the Digipak
After making a clearer example of what our digipak will look like, I am going to organise where to do the shoot, who I will need and which object I would need.
In total, I will need to shoot 4 images.
One of them being the front of the band, another one being the back of the band, the image of trees and coloured powder being thrown about.
We can use our school photography studio to take images of the band, as we will have access to professional lightings and either clear black or white backgrounds to choose from.
To take images of the coloured powder, as a group, we haven't decided whether to be an indoors shoot or outdoors.
To take images of the trees, I will travel to Osterley park or Richmond park and take some images.
For the song titles, the background will be plain black with white writing so it does not matter as much.
Checklist:
- I need to find out who is free when so I can organise when everyone is free to do the shoot.
- Order coloured powders - when arrived, finish the shoot
- Plan your weekend to visit either parks - edit the images
- Book the school studio in advance
28/02/16
It has been planned to do the shoot on Monday, next week after school in the school studio as this day everyone will be free. By planning a week ahead, this will give us time to organise the props and costume and what kind of camera setting and lighting to use to achieve the best shot. Also planning how they'd pose. Looking down or up? and etc. If any makeup needed, we can provide it quicker. It gives us more flexibility.

Designing the digipak 3:
After making a digital version of how the digipak will look, I started to plan when to shoot the band and if anything was needed to purchase.
I have made a list of which equipment was needed to make this digipak:
- Coloured Powder
- Cult outfits
- Camera
- Box Lighting
- Studio
- Woods
I have searched online where I can purchase the coloured powder and I have found something on Amazon.co.uk
We can use the cult costume used for the music video. Also I will book the school studio so I can capture the photographs. In my spare time, I will travel to a forest or a park near by to get the image of the woods.

Designing the disgipak 2:
After we have filmed the music video, it was time to start designing the dig pa and the website of our band.
I was in charge of the digipak and Ben is in charge of creating the website while Lewis is editing the music video.
From my first research of digipaks, I have found there are many types of layouts which could be used, whether to have pockets or not and use of different colours.
For our digipak, it has been decided to have the outside of the digipak in black and white, very dull and dark then when the digipak is opened, it will be filled with bright and exotic colours. To achieve this design, I have used a 6 panel digipak template to hand draw on to get a rough idea.
In our digpak, it will include:
This is a hand drawn example of how the digipak will look like:
I have also included which background colour or an image each cover/panel will use and also the font colours if used.

I have made this digipak by using Adobe Photoshop and a template downloaded from this website.
By doing this, it will make it easier for me to edit for the real digipak.

Filming 2
After receiving an audience feedback with our first draft of the music video, it was said tat they wanted to see more of the main character on his own and doing a little bit more of performance, so I have booked the studio so we can film him alone with a plain background.
“At the moment, I can’t really tell who the main character or the singer is in the music video, so I’d like to see more of the main singer alone, performing” - Callum Maytham
“I don’t understand whether the cults are the band members or they’re just actors..” - Alex Knight
“Add in more footages that music videos include like where they're singing and stuff” - Rosie Johnson
“This is so good!! But I think you should have less footages of the cults because music videos are always about the main artists and I don’t really like a lot of narrative based music videos, they’re boring without the main singer!” - Georgina Wile

Filming 1
Yesterday, we have filmed our music video in Richmond park, surrounded by stick dens and trees which was so perfect and appropriate to use as the location to film. We met at 11am and finished at 5pm. The process of make up was quick. I was in charge of using a black coloured powder to draw a design on each actors face.
Lewis had set up his camera, using a red gel filter so when we add a black and white filter later when we are editing, the sky and the clouds will look very dark so it will have a dull finish.
After the actors were ready to begin, we decided to film using our storyboard to help us remember which shot is meant to last for how many seconds and what the actors have to do.
We have filmed the same scene about 5 times so we can compare which filming was the best. This also includes directing and trying to make the scene better.
For example, in the first scene where the leader spreads his arms which indicates the cults to find the missing cult, there were some turning to the right, some turning towards the left. When we watched the playback, I noticed that this doesn't really make sense and looks unorganised. So I suggested that every cult turn in the same direction so it flows.
Also, when we had filmed this scene the second time, we noticed that the camera frame did not fit all of the cults, so we spreader them out so every cult is in show during the scene.
Then we had filmed 3 more times so we can pick out the best scene filmed.
I didn't do much of the filming as I was in charge of the directing.
Lewis had filmed the first half and used various equipments to avoid error. Such as a tripod to reduce the risk of shake and keeping the camera still.
Ben had filmed the other half and used some of his technique where he has filmed the same scene from a different angle and shot sizes so we have more than one to choose from which will fit in likely in our Music Video. This is a good organisation as if the Music Video did not go in the order of our storyboard, we can have spare which might fit in and balance it out.
For me, I found it easier to direct as the whole group was concentrated and knew what they had to do.

Animatic Storyboard
The boys had hand drawn the storyboard so we briefly know what the Music Video will look like.
After the hand drawn storyboard had been completed, I have uploaded pthe images of each shots and created an animatic storyboard so we know which shot is meant to be in the timing of the music so it will flow perfectly in time.
How to make an animatic storyboard:
First as all the images were in a portrait angle, I had to rotate them to make it in a landscape angle and also crop the outlines.
I have added in the music and then dragged the images from "All clips" whereI have imported all of the images from Lewis's phone, and drag them in the black box.
After finishing that, I had to minimise the time of how long the shot will be in show. In the image below, you can see where highlighted yellow, that there are some think and some thin space of the images. This shows different length of how long the film will be in the timing of the music.
I have tried to balance it out with the beat of the song and cuts after a sentence of the song.
It did take a long time to create an animatic storyboard as it took some time to figure out how long the shot should be so it will all be fitted in time. First time, the length of the shots were too short so the whole images did not fit till the song had ended.
My second go lasted till the song had ended by duplicating some of the shots.
Now it works perfectly and flow in time.
