Production Design Research

In today's lesson we have learnt an important role that production deign plays in the Music video and how the quality of the Music Video refers to how good the production design has been organised.
The production design is important when making a Music Video because every Music Video is different regarding to the theme of the song and the genre. As it will be odd if a pop song has been shot in a graveyard.
Also the production design self-references to the artist. If the artist is into punk rock, the production design will organise an appropriate props for the artist which may be an electric guitar or a set of drums.

Production Design includes:
  • Costumes
  • Hair
  • Lighting
  • Location
  • Make up
  • Props (most important).
  • Set
Bad Romance - Lady Gaga

In this MV, there are 12 costume changes, 12 hair and make up looks, use of sport light, soft box lighting and streak lighting, which are back lit, front lit and from above. The whole music video was being filmed in Los Angeles, California and the set was designed to be a "futuristic version of Russian Mafias" bathhouse according to the director Francis Lawrence. Also Thomas Kloss, the cinematographer has said that is it a simple set up, very clean and very graphic. The amount of props which has been used in the Music Video is uncountable,  thousands of dollars has been used to set up the props and the setting.
I have researched one of Lady Gaga's song because Lady Gaga is portrayed as "crazy", "wild", and "weird" which have been shown through the media.
Also even in the "Urban Dictionary" an "Urban" dictionary where adolescents upload their opinion or thought on a person, a phrase or a definition on a word like a slang translator, Lady Gaga has been described as "Unicorn in a man suit" and "a perfect example of sending your daughter to a catholic school" which obviously results that Lady Gaga is seen as negative influence. The sultry costumes and the pristine setting helps to create a dystopian feel.
